This tool solves a problem created by newer replacement manhole covers. The older style covers have a hole (or holes) through them and are removed by using a pick. The new covers are designed to minimize water infiltration through the cover and have two slots, rather than holes on the outer edges opposite each other. These slots are built into the cover, not through it. This makes traditional manhole cover removal methods obsolete.
This new one person design clamps onto these ventless style covers enabling the removal and replacement to be accomplished safer and easier. A tension spring adjusts automatically to different diameter covers and holds the tool securely in position during this procedure.
To attach the tool first be sure that both slots and the outside edge of the cover are free of debris and tar with the slot cleaning tool supplied within the handle. Then insert the "lid buster" tip into the nearest slot and by pressing down on the handle loosen cover for removal. Next, place tool on top of cover with closest hook securely in closest slot and the other hook aimed toward the opposite slot. Applying gentle downward pressure on the top of the tool will allow the hooks to spread until the second hook seats securely in the opposite slot. The tool is now clamped into position and will not release until the reverse procedure is accomplished. Using correct lifting form,(see pictures) remove cover. Do Not tilt cover past 90 degrees as weight of cover could cause premature release of cover.
This design allows one person to safely and easily remove and replace these ventless covers. The tool is persicison laser cut out of 1/4" American steel plate, welded, then finished with a tough durable safety yellow powder coat 3 mls. thick. Made in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania .
